Size, Unit Number and Debris Type: Dumpster Details That Make Pickups Go Smoothly

"Grab the dumpster on Elm" is a fine instruction until there are two on Elm, or the customer has a 15-yard and a 30-yard on the same job site, or the load inside is not what was booked. A few specific details on every job remove those questions before they become problems.

The Three Details

Every DumpsterBossPro job can carry dumpster details: the size in yards, the unit number and the debris type. Sizes cover the common 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40-yard containers. Those three facts follow the job from intake to the driver app to the invoice.

They also tie directly to the haul-to address covered in The Haul-To Address: Sending Every Pickup to the Right Landfill or Transfer Station, because the debris type usually decides where the load goes.

Size: Planning the Truck and the Swap

Size matters most for swaps. If the customer has a 20-yard and needs another round, the truck needs an empty 20-yard loaded. If they want to step up to a 30, the empty has to be a 30. Getting the size wrong on a swap means a wasted trip.

Size also matters for chaining a run. A 20-yard pickup that gets dumped can become the next 20-yard delivery. When the sizes are on every job, the dispatcher can see those chains on the dispatch board.

And size matters for the conversation with the customer. Someone who calls for a swap on their third 10-yard in two weeks might be better served by a 20 or a 30. Seeing the size on every past job makes it easy to suggest stepping up, which means fewer swaps for them and fewer truck trips for you. A larger can on a heavy-debris job is a different story, since weight limits come into play, so make the suggestion with the debris type in mind.

Unit Number: Picking Up the Right Can

Unit numbers help when a customer has more than one container, when a contractor has cans on multiple job sites, or when two cans of the same size sit next to each other. The driver can match the number painted on the can to the number on the job.

Unit numbers are also helpful for your own records: if a can comes back damaged, you know where it was last. Note that DumpsterBossPro records the unit number on the job; it is not a separate asset or container-location tracking system, so the unit number is as accurate as what you enter.

Debris Type: Where It Goes and What It Costs

Debris type decides the haul-to site, the included weight and sometimes the price. Clean concrete, roofing shingles, construction debris and household junk all behave differently at the scale and at the gate. Record what was booked, and update it if the customer tells you something changed.

When a driver arrives and the load does not match the booking, photos in the driver app and a note on the job give the office what it needs to talk to the customer. Rules about prohibited items vary by location, so set your own policies and check local requirements.

Using the Details in the Driver App

Drivers see the size, unit number and debris type on each job in the driver app, along with placement and access notes. That means no calling the office to ask "which one?" and no guessing at the dump about which line to get into.

Train drivers to glance at all three before hooking up: right size, right unit, debris looks like what was booked. If anything is off, a photo and a note before leaving the site saves an argument later.

The details also help at the end of the day. When a driver has done six jobs across three sizes, the office can look at the dispatch board and see exactly which cans came back, which went out, and which loads went to which haul-to site. That makes it far easier to plan tomorrow's swaps and deliveries without calling every driver to ask what is on the trucks.

Getting the Details Right From the Start

These details are only useful if they are filled in. Make them part of the intake routine for every delivery so they are already there when the pickup call comes. For customers moving from a spreadsheet or another system, CSV import can bring in existing customer records so you are not starting from zero.
