The Haul-To Address: Sending Every Pickup to the Right Landfill or Transfer Station
Every pickup has two addresses that matter: where the can is, and where the load goes. The first is easy to remember because the customer tells you. The second is often left in the driver's head. That works until a new driver takes a load of mixed debris to a site that only takes clean concrete, or drives forty minutes to a landfill when the transfer station was ten minutes away.
Two Addresses on Every Job
In DumpsterBossPro, every job carries the customer site address and a haul-to address for the landfill or transfer station. Both appear in the driver app with one-tap navigation, so the driver goes from the site to the right dump without asking.
The scale tickets covered in Scale Tickets on Pickups: Entering Tons and Billing Overweight Loads come from wherever the load is hauled, so getting the haul-to address right is also how you get the right ticket and the right price.
Choosing the Haul-To Site
Which site gets a load usually depends on a few things:
- Debris type: some sites accept only certain materials, and some take recyclables like clean concrete or metal for less.
- Distance: from the customer site, and from the next stop.
- Price per ton at each site.
- Hours and lines: a cheaper site with a long line at 10 a.m. might cost more in truck time.
Rules on what each site accepts vary by location, so check your local requirements. Once you know the answer for a debris type and area, make it the default habit for whoever sets up jobs.
Set It at Intake, Not on the Road
The haul-to address should be set when the job is created or reviewed, based on the debris type recorded at intake. When a driver has to decide on the fly, decisions get made on gut feel and habit, and the habit is usually "the one I always go to."
Setting it up front also lets the dispatcher plan. A run where all three pickups go to the same transfer station is efficient. A run that sends one load north to a landfill and the next one south to a recycler is not, and you want to see that before the truck leaves.
It also protects your pricing. If you quoted a customer assuming their load would go to the nearby transfer station, and a driver takes it to a landfill across the county, the job costs you more than you planned. When the haul-to address is set on the job, the plan and the quote match.
If the debris turns out to be different from what was booked, update the debris type and the haul-to address together. A driver who discovers on site that the clean-concrete can is full of mixed trash should call it in, take photos in the driver app, and let the office change the destination before heading out.
How the Haul-To Shapes the Run
On the Waiting List map, look at where the haul-to sites sit relative to each pickup. A pickup that is close to its dump is a short cycle. A pickup that is far from any acceptable site is a long one. When you circle a group of pickups to assign to a driver and roll-off truck, think about where each load goes, not just where it starts.
Auto-routing orders the stops, and the dispatch board shows the route order by truck and day. The haul-to legs are where you can save the most time by choosing well.
Dump & Returns and Relocates
For a dump & return, the haul-to address decides how long the customer is without their can, since the truck has to go there and come back. Choose the closest acceptable site when you can.
For a same-site relocate, there may be no haul-to leg at all. For a relocate to a new site, the new site address matters more than any dump. Getting the job type right at intake keeps the driver app from showing a haul-to leg that is not needed.
Better Driver Days
Drivers appreciate knowing where they are going. One-tap navigation to both the site and the dump means less time on the phone with the office and fewer wrong turns, especially for newer drivers who have not learned every site's quirks yet. Put site notes in the job, such as which gate to use at a busy transfer station.
