The Waiting List: Every Delivery, Pickup and Swap Request on a Live Map
A roll-off company's day is decided by the requests that came in since yesterday: new deliveries, swaps for contractors whose cans filled early, and pulls from customers who finished. On a pad, those are a list. On a map, they are a plan waiting to happen.
Recording Dumpster Size, Unit Number and Debris Type on Every Job covered the details every job carries. This guide covers where those jobs wait before anyone is assigned to them.
What Belongs on the Waiting List
The Waiting List is every request that has been taken but not yet assigned to a driver and truck. A homeowner's delivery for Thursday, a contractor's swap for tomorrow morning, a pickup a customer requested from the customer app and a relocate on a big job site can all sit there together.
The rule should be simple. If a request is real and not assigned, it is on the Waiting List. Not in a text on the owner's phone, not on a sticky note on the monitor, not in a voicemail nobody has played. One list, so nothing gets forgotten.
Why the Map Changes Your Decisions
In DumpsterBossPro, every request on the Waiting List shows as a pin on a live map at its site address. That turns a list of addresses into a picture of your service area. You can see five requests clustered on one side of town, a single pull far out on a county road and a swap sitting right next to tomorrow's delivery.
Once you see the work that way, the decisions get easier. Requests close together go to one truck in sequence. A lone pickup might wait a day for a truck that will already be out that way. A dispatcher looking at a list has to picture all of that in his head. A dispatcher looking at a map just sees it.
Circling and Selecting Requests
The map is not just for looking. You can circle a group of requests on the map, or select them from the list, and assign them to a driver and roll-off truck in one step. On a Monday after a busy weekend of web requests, that is the difference between handing out work in a few minutes and doing the same clicks for every single job.
A good habit is to look at the map every time a new pin lands. Does it fit with something already open? Is a truck about to be in that area? Grouping as you go keeps the list short and keeps two trucks from crossing paths all day.
Mixing Deliveries, Swaps and Pulls
Roll-off work has a natural rhythm that the map helps you use. A truck that pulls a full can near a delivery site can sometimes haul to disposal, come back empty and set the new delivery, depending on your sizes and your yard. A swap is a pull and a set in one stop. Seeing every job type on the same map helps you build days with fewer empty miles.
Size matters here too. A truck can only carry one can at a time on most roll-off setups, so a day that is all 30s and 40s plays out differently from a day of 10s for heavy material. The size on each job helps you plan the day with the real equipment in mind.
Keeping the List Short
A long Waiting List is a warning light. Either requests are coming in faster than trucks are clearing them, or some are sitting because nobody wants them: the pull on the far edge of the service area, the relocate that needs a site visit, the swap for a contractor who has not paid. Look at what has been sitting longest and decide on purpose. Assign it, schedule it for a specific day, or call the customer and tell them the truth.
Requests that are not for today can be given a date and a truck right away, so they move to the dispatch board and stop cluttering the view. The Waiting List should be about work that still needs a decision.
Where the Waiting List Fits
The Waiting List is the inbox. The dispatch board is the plan. The driver app is where the plan gets done. Every job moves through those three, and the map ties them together so the office and the drivers are looking at the same picture.
The next guide covers the step right after this one: assigning requests to a driver and truck. To see how the Waiting List connects to dispatch, billing and customer texts, visit the DumpsterBossPro dumpster rental software page.
