Running a Swap From the Driver App: Empty On, Full Off, Haul-To Next

The swap is the bread and butter of roll-off. A customer filled their can and needs another one. The driver shows up with an empty, sets it down, picks up the full one, and hauls it to the landfill or transfer station. Simple on paper. In practice, a swap has more ways to go wrong than any other job type, because it is a delivery and a pickup in one trip.

Following the time clock article, Time Clock in the Dumpster Driver App: Hours Recorded as They Happen, this guide walks through a swap from the driver's seat.

Before Leaving the Yard

A swap starts with the right empty on the truck. Open the job and check the size. The customer might want the same size back, or they might have sized up after realizing a 15 was not enough for a kitchen and two bathrooms. The size on the job is what goes on the hoist.

Check the debris type and the haul-to too. If the full can is mixed construction debris going to the transfer station, you know where you are headed after the site. If it is clean concrete headed for a recycler, that is a different trip and maybe a different time of day.

On Site: Find the Right Can

On a residential job, there is usually one can. On a contractor site, there might be several, from you and from other companies. The unit number on the job tells you which one is being swapped. Check it before you hook anything. Pulling the wrong can is a mistake that ends with two angry customers.

If the unit number on the can does not match the job, stop and call the office before hooking anything. Maybe the yard loaded a different unit on delivery and nobody updated the record, or maybe there is a second can of yours on the site that the office forgot about. Either way, it is a two-minute call that prevents a much longer problem.

Read the placement notes again. On a swap, the empty usually goes where the full one was, but sometimes the customer wants it moved, or the site has changed since the delivery. A pile of lumber now sits where the can used to be. The notes and the delivery photo help you put the empty where it belongs.

The Dance on Site

Every driver has their own swap routine depending on the site. On a wide driveway, you might drop the empty beside the full one, pull the full one, then reposition the empty. On a tight site, you might have to pull the full can, set it out of the way on the curb, drop the empty, then reload the full one. Access notes help here. A note like "Tight drive, stage full can at curb" saves the next driver from figuring it out from scratch.

Photos matter on a swap. A shot of the full can before it comes off shows how it was loaded, which helps if the load turns out to be overweight or has material that should not have been in it. A shot of the empty after it is set closes out the placement.

Customer Texts on a Swap

Send the on-the-way text when you leave the previous stop, so the customer can stop loading and clear the area. The arrival text tells them the truck is there. On contractor sites, this is often the moment a crew member walks over to tell you they are not quite done filling it, which is something better discovered before you have the full can chained.

The Haul-To Leg

With the full can on the truck, tap the haul-to address and navigation opens. At the scale, the driver gets the scale ticket. The weight is entered on the job by the office, and any overage is billed per ton, so getting the ticket to the office matters. Whatever your routine is for tickets, follow it the same way every time.

If the haul-to on the job turns out to be wrong for the load, because the customer threw in material the facility will not take or because the facility is closed, call the office before driving somewhere else. The office can update the haul-to so the job record shows where the load really went.

Closing It Out

Tap complete when the swap is done according to your company's definition. The office sees it, the rental tracking stays accurate, and the job is ready for invoicing. For how swaps fit into the rest of the driver's day, visit the dumpster driver app page.
